Maroc : Une légende espagnole pour remplacer Regragui ?
Walid Regragui's future as head coach of the Moroccan national team appears more uncertain than ever. While the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) issued a statement on Tuesday denying any imminent separation from its coach, several sources in Spain maintain that the decision to make a change has already been made internally.
According to the sports daily "Marca," the end of the Regragui era has been decided behind the scenes. The official announcement of his departure is simply a matter of timing, as the federation is waiting to finalize the identity of his successor before making any public announcement.
According to the Madrid-based media outlet, Xavi Hernández is the frontrunner to take over as manager of the Atlas Lions. Available since the end of his tenure at FC Barcelona, the former iconic midfielder of the Catalan club fits the profile sought by the Moroccan management: an international figure, a proponent of attacking football, and capable of injecting new energy into an ambitious squad.
Morocco, a historic semi-finalist in the 2022 World Cup, has high ambitions for the 2026 World Cup. The objective would be to capitalize on the momentum of recent years while starting a new cycle.
For now, the FRMF officially maintains its confidence in Walid Regragui. But behind the scenes, the search for the next national team coach is reportedly progressing actively.
It remains to be seen whether the discussions with Xavi will be successful and whether the former Blaugrana coach will accept the challenge of leading a highly promising African team, just over a year before the major world tournament.
