Maroc/CAN: les supporters sénégalais détenus suivent un "jeûne" par intermittence (avocat)
The 18 Senegalese detained in Morocco after incidents during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) are following an intermittent "fast," their lawyer told AFP on Saturday, the day after the announcement of a hunger strike by these supporters.
They are being prosecuted for "hooliganism," an accusation that includes acts of violence, particularly against law enforcement, damage to sports equipment, and throwing projectiles. Their next court hearing is scheduled for next Thursday.
To "protest against what they consider an injustice", they decided to only eat "breakfast" and "the rest of the time they are in prayer and contemplation", assured their lawyer Me Patrick Kabou, referring to "a fast" rather than "a hunger strike".
In a message relayed by Mr. Kabou the day before, the supporters declared themselves to be on "continuous fasting until the day Moroccan justice allows us to express ourselves".
The prosecutor of the Rabat court of first instance stated in a press release on Saturday that the detainees receive "normal and regular meals" from the prison.
According to a source close to the prosecutor's office, the prison director informed the prosecutor that "seven of them" had not shown up for lunch on Friday but had "bought food." The supporters then "had dinner" in the prison cafeteria, according to the same source.
The detainees also said in the message to their lawyer on Friday that they did not understand the accusations against them, claiming they had been questioned "in French and Arabic" while they only speak "Wolof".
According to the prosecutor, an interpreter translated "all of the exchanges" into French, "a language understood and spoken by all the detainees without exception."
When contacted by AFP, the Senegalese authorities did not immediately comment.
On January 18, during the AFCON final in Rabat, Senegal won 1-0 after a chaotic match marred by incidents.
Following a penalty awarded to Morocco in second half stoppage time, just after a goal was disallowed for Senegal, Senegalese supporters attempted to invade the pitch for nearly 15 minutes.
