MLS: Messi mène l'Inter Miami vers sa première finale de conférence
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi propelled Inter Miami to the MLS Eastern Conference playoff final with a goal and three assists in Sunday's 4-0 victory in Cincinnati.
This is the first time that the 38-year-old "Pulga" has reached the conference final since his arrival in 2023. The Florida franchise, which started in MLS in 2020, has never reached this level of competition.
His team will compete on Saturday against New York City, an opponent they thrashed 4-0 in September, for a place in the championship final.
Inter Miami, who finished third in their conference at the end of the regular season, delivered a performance on the pitch of Cincinnati, second, worthy of a serious contender for the title.
"The players showed incredible character and played an almost perfect match," said coach Javier Mascherano.
In addition to Messi, the manager fielded Argentine World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul in the starting lineup, along with Spanish stars Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who will retire at the end of the season. Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez only entered the game for the final fifteen minutes, by which time the outcome was already decided.
Messi opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a glancing header, a rare feat for the playmaker. Mateo Silvetti (59 years old) and Tadeo Allende (62, 74 years old) sealed the victory in the second half.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, considered one of the best footballers in history, finished the regular season in first place in the scoring (29) and assists (19) rankings.
In the Western Conference, Thomas Müller's Vancouver Whitcaps await their opponent in the final, which will be either San Diego or Minnesota.
