Mondial 2026 : 10 nations africaines, un record historique
The 2026 World Cup will mark a turning point for African football. For the first time, ten teams from the continent will take part in the final phase of the World Cup, a historic record made possible by the expansion to 48 teams.
The African representatives are now known: South Africa, Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, DR Congo, Senegal, and Tunisia. Never before has the Confederation of African Football sent so many countries to a single edition.
An edition that changes scale
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marks the beginning of a new era with an expanded format. Africa has secured nine direct qualification spots, supplemented by DR Congo's qualification through the intercontinental playoff tournament.
This massive presence is changing the perception of the tournament for the continent. It gives more opportunities to established nations, but also to underdogs capable of causing an upset. Cape Verde, qualifying for the first time, perfectly embodies this new openness.
The Democratic Republic of Congo completes the African picture
The return of the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the strongest symbols of this edition. The Leopards are back at the World Cup 52 years after their first participation, when the country was still known as Zaire.
Their qualification, secured after a victory against Jamaica in the playoffs, brought the African total to ten. It also adds a popular dimension to a tournament already eagerly anticipated by fans across the continent.
A ceiling to break
Since Morocco's historic semi-final appearance in 2022, African ambition has shifted. Teams on the continent no longer simply want to advance from the group stage or achieve a one-off upset. They want to be consistent, win knockout matches, and establish themselves in the final four.
The challenge remains immense. Team composition, squad depth, logistical management, and experience in major tournaments will make the difference. But with ten representatives, Africa will have more opportunities to translate its potential into results.
The 2026 World Cup does not guarantee a revolution. However, it offers a rare opportunity: to see several styles, several generations, and several African histories defending the same ambition on the biggest stage in world football.
