Mondial-2026 : Gros coup dur pour l'Espagne qui perd une pépite
FC Barcelona's Spanish midfielder Fermin Lopez, who left Sunday's Liga match against Betis Seville injured, has suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, his club announced on Monday, three weeks before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been fundamental this season at Barça where he has established himself as a starter with a decisive impact (13 goals, 17 assists), will have to undergo surgery, the Catalan club specifies.
According to the Spanish press, which mentions an absence of several months, he should be forced to withdraw from the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico (June 11-July 19).
The European champion and 2024 Olympic champion was guaranteed to be part of the list of La Roja, one of the favorites of the tournament, which will be announced on May 25 by coach Luis de La Fuente.
His absence would leave a place open in midfield, which could prompt the Spanish coach to recall his favorite Gavi, 21, who is back as a starter at Barça after two seasons cut short by injuries.
Beyond the case of Fermin Lopez, Spain has several major players injured or currently recovering less than a month before its entry into the competition, including Lamine Yamal (FC Barcelona), Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao) and Mikel Merino (Arsenal).
