Mondial-2026 : statues renversées et maillots brûlés à Mexico lors d'une manifestation enseignante
Overturned statues, burned jerseys, a giant ball in the middle of the street: teachers protested in Mexico City on Tuesday to demand pay raises by targeting symbols of the football World Cup.
An exhibition dedicated to the World Cup held in Mexico, the United States and Canada from June 11 to July 19 was targeted by the demonstration organized by a dissident group from the CNTE education union.
The CNTE also brandished the threat of mass mobilizations during the opening match of the World Cup between Mexico and South Africa, on June 11 at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City.
On Tuesday, five-meter-high statues of footballers on the Paseo de la Reforma, a major thoroughfare in the capital, were toppled with ropes, including those representing Belgium, France and Spain, whose jerseys were burned by protesters.
If the demands are not met, "the ball will not roll," could be read on a mannequin displayed by the protesters whose previous demonstration had been dispersed on Monday with tear gas near the very sensitive Zócalo square, where a "fan zone" is to be set up during the competition.
The CNTE is demanding a wage increase and the repeal of a pension law. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for a peaceful protest, and her government has issued a statement calling for a return to the negotiating table.
