Mourinho sur Vinicius : « Cela se produit dans de nombreux stades, toujours avec le même joueur »
José Mourinho is refusing to take a stance. On Tuesday evening, Real Madrid won in Lisbon against Benfica (1-0) in the first leg of their Champions League playoff, but Vinicius, the goalscorer, denounced a "racist and cowardly" act by Argentinian Gianluca Prestianni. The Brazilian claims he was called a "monkey" by his opponent.
The Portuguese club's coach, José Mourinho, indicated that he had spoken with both men. "Vinícius says one thing and Prestianni says another. I could be radical and say that I only believe what Prestianni tells me (...) I try to be balanced and I don't want to say that Vinícius is a liar and that Prestianni is an incredible guy," responded the "Special One." "Álvaro (Arbeloa) and Kylian (Mbappé) have chosen a different perspective; I don't want to go down that road."
After opening the scoring with a right-footed shot (50th minute), Vinicius celebrated by taunting the crowd. This sparked a discussion with several Benfica players. The Brazilian striker then ran towards the referee to tell him he had been called a "monkey" (mono, in Spanish). Although referee François Letexier followed UEFA protocol, the match eventually resumed after a nearly ten-minute interruption. This left Vinicius feeling quite frustrated.
"Why doesn't he celebrate with the joy of scoring?"
"He goes through many stages and it's always the same thing, there's something wrong," José Mourinho continued regarding Vinicius. "I told Vinicius that he scores extraordinary goals, but why does he celebrate them like that and not like one of the best players in the world, like Di Stéfano, Pelé, Eusébio... why doesn't he celebrate with the joy of scoring? It's always the same thing. That's what I can't understand."
Accused by Vinicius, Gianluca Prestianni offered a surprising defense, explaining that he had called his opponent a "faggot" (maricón in Spanish), seemingly believing that homophobia was more acceptable than racism. Prestianni's teammate, Kylian Mbappé, claims to have heard him say "mono" several times. "We cannot accept that a player participating in the best football competition in Europe behaves like this," the Frenchman fumed. "In my opinion, he no longer deserves this opportunity. (...) UEFA is trying to take action, but this is a serious case, and I hope that decisions will be made calmly."
