Pratiques mystiques avec des chatons : la DPN met en garde Reug Reug
The National Parks Directorate (DPN) condemned on Sunday the dissemination of images showing the use of kittens in a context of mystical practices during the wrestling session between wrestlers Reug Reug and Boy Niang 2 on June 7, 2026.
In a statement, the institution responsible for implementing the State's policy on biodiversity conservation expressed its "deep concern" over these images which have circulated on social media and sparked strong reactions.
The DPN believes that these facts "raise legitimate concerns regarding respect for animal welfare" and are part of a recent surge in acts of animal abuse.
She points out that these practices, "sometimes committed as part of mystical rituals or shows", harm animal welfare and are contrary to the principles of respect for life, as well as to Senegal's commitments to wildlife protection.
The institution also emphasizes that Senegal has ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity and has a legal framework, including the Hunting and Wildlife Protection Code and various regulatory texts, strictly governing the keeping, use and mistreatment of animals.
The DPN warns that any duly recorded offence is subject to administrative and criminal sanctions provided for by the laws in force.
In response to this situation, she calls on citizens, sports organizations, the media and social media users to promote a culture of respect for animals and to ban any practice that harms their well-being.
The Senegalese Wrestling Federation is also urged to take "all necessary measures" to prevent the recurrence of such incidents during competitions and sporting events under its jurisdiction.
"Compliance with regulations relating to the protection of wildlife will be ensured with the utmost vigilance," the DPN finally declared, promising the strict application of sanctions in the event of an infraction.
