Nouveau coach de l’OM : Les premiers mots d’Habib Bèye
Habib Bèye gave his first interview as Olympique de Marseille coach at a press conference. The former Senegalese international, whose appearances were anticipated in the still-heated atmosphere of the Canebière, immediately expressed his desire to calm things down.
Tempering the Marseille “madness”
Aware of the heated atmosphere surrounding the Marseille club, Bèye stressed the need to keep a cool head. "We are all different as coaches. This club brings you into immense emotions, but sometimes you have to know how to remain calm and serene," he explained.
Describing himself as "someone quite calm," he emphasized the importance of "calming the situation" in order to move forward in the same direction.
In Marseille, where passion can quickly turn into pressure, the new coach wants to create a more relaxed atmosphere to promote performance. "You have to be calm and composed," he reiterated.
A vertical game project… but pragmatic
When questioned about his tactical intentions, Bèye was both ambitious and cautious. "With the group at our disposal, we need to have a desire to be direct and to play good football," he declared, without promising an immediate revolution.
The coach refuses to prematurely "sell" a fixed game plan. He knows that the demanding and passionate Marseille fans want entertainment as much as results.
“People want to feel the excitement and identify with this team,” he emphasized, while also praising the work done previously: “We can’t denigrate what has been done. There has been some spectacular football.”
In Marseille more than anywhere else, style counts. "Here, that's what you're very quickly punished for by the public who are in love with football and the club," he reminded, aware of the delicate balance between playing identity and efficiency.
The Rennes example as a reference
To illustrate his method, Bèye drew on his experience at Stade Rennais FC. "When I took over Rennes, they were 16th in Ligue 1. Innovations were secondary; we had to be pragmatic." The manager claimed tangible progress: "Rennes was 6th when we left." A trajectory he hopes to replicate on the Canebière, even if the Marseille context is significantly different.
At OM, Bèye wants to combine tactical analysis with the immediate demand for results. "We will analyze what we can do tactically, because we have the quality of players that allows us to do that. But above all, we need to get results," he emphasizes.
