OM-OL : Habib Bèye évoque le retrait du brassard au capitaine Léonardo Balerdi
Habib Bèye recorded his first victory as manager of Olympique de Marseille (OM) on Sunday. His team defeated Olympique Lyonnais 3-2 in a thrilling match. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang notably scored twice. Leonardo Balerdi, OM's captain, lost the armband to Dane Pierre-Emile Højbjerg during the match. This did not go unnoticed by journalists.
"I would like to keep the discussion I had with Leo on this subject."
At the press conference, they asked the Senegalese coach the reasons behind the change of captain's armband. Habib Bèye declined to explain his decision, but said he had spoken with the Argentinian defender.
“Leo had a very big game. I would like to keep the discussion I had with Leo about it. But in any case, I saw him, I explained to him why I wanted to relieve him of this responsibility. I think that Pierre now has this responsibility within the group,” said the OM coach.
Apart from the Dane, several other players can claim the captaincy, the Senegalese coach points out.
"A very, very great defender"
He specifically mentions Nayef Aguerd, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Benjamin Pavard, "who has a lot of experience." Habib Bèye says he has no doubt about the respect between these players and is delighted with Balerdi's attitude, who showed "what a truly great defender" he is in this match against Lyon, even though he is not the captain.
For the native of Suresnes, the Argentinian understood what he told him.
