OM : Le directeur sportif Mehdi Benatia dépose le tablier
Mehdi Benatia is no longer the sporting director of Olympique de Marseille (OM). The Moroccan announced his resignation yesterday, Sunday, February 15.
"After much deliberation, I took responsibility and decided on Monday, February 9th to end my collaboration with OM," the former Juve central defender wrote on his Instagram account.
"I did indeed submit (not offer) my resignation."
He justified his resignation by citing tensions surrounding the club's management. "In Marseille, results are the only measure of success. You know my frankness and transparency. Therefore, given the tensions surrounding the management, I did indeed submit (and not offer) my resignation, because, in my opinion, the club will always come before individuals, and I do not want my presence to become an obstacle or a burden to the organization and its development," Benatia stated.
He believes he "did his best" in his position, "professionally." His only regret: "Not having succeeded in calming the environment around the group," which, according to him, "has more than enough capacity to achieve the required objectives."
Nothing is lost, the former player believes. "Today, we are still in the running. The objective of qualifying for the Champions League is clearly within our reach and we are still in contention to bring the Coupe de France home," Benatia stated in the press release announcing his resignation.
Let us remember that the Moroccan was appointed sporting director of OM in January 2025.
