"On est des humains, on peut se tromper..mais on est revenus sur le terrain" : Pape Gueye évoque la finale de la CAN
"We can make mistakes" but "we're back on the pitch," said Pape Gueye, the Senegalese goalscorer in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco (1-0 aet) a week ago, on Sunday in Téléfoot.
"We're human, we can make mistakes, we recognized that because we came back onto the pitch," the 26-year-old midfielder emphasized. The AFCON final was interrupted for a long time after a penalty was awarded to Morocco deep into second-half stoppage time.
Furious, the Senegalese players left the pitch, protesting the referee's call for a slight push on Brahim Diaz, and frustrated that the official hadn't reviewed a disallowed goal moments earlier. After several minutes in the locker room, the Senegalese finally returned to the field.
When asked about Sadio Mané's request to return, Pape Gueye continued: "It's powerful, he knew how to give that speech, at the right time with the right words, to remobilize everyone. It shows his importance in the team, we knew how to listen to him, thank you Sadio."
Diaz's missed Panenka penalty, which allowed Senegal to force extra time? "It's daring, I wouldn't have done it," Pape Gueye admitted. "It's not a risk I would have taken. But it was attempted; if he scores, he's behind Zidane," who scored a successful Panenka penalty in the 2006 World Cup final.
Despite the confusion that reigned during the final, Pape Gueye said he wanted to "focus on the positive; it was an extremely well-organized AFCON by Morocco."
