Pape Thiaw avant Sénégal-Soudan : « Le mental va jouer un rôle essentiel »
On the eve of a crucial match for the Lions of Teranga, coach Pape Thiaw displayed a combative composure. Facing a Sudanese team that Senegal knows well, there is no room for overconfidence. For the Senegalese coach, advancing to the knockout stage radically changes the game.
Although Senegal has already faced Sudan, Pape Thiaw refuses to see the opponent as a sacrificial lamb. "We have played Sudan twice and we have observed them during this competition. They are a very disciplined, well-organized team and very strong in transitions," he analyzed precisely.
The coach was keen to reiterate a long-standing truth of the Africa Cup of Nations: dominating the first round guarantees nothing for the rest of the tournament. "It won't be an easy match at all. These are knockout matches, where mental strength plays a crucial role. We've often seen teams breeze through the group stage only to be caught off guard."
To overcome this obstacle, Pape Thiaw is counting on a perfect balance between psychological preparation and tactical discipline. According to him, the game will be decided in the penalty areas. "We've prepared ourselves tactically, but also mentally. In these kinds of matches, you have to show a winning attitude and be effective in both penalty areas," he emphasized.
The question of the left flank, where El Hadji Malick Diouf and Ismaila Jakobs are vying for a starting spot, was also addressed. The coach is pleased with the depth of the squad: “The competition is healthy. Both players have shown promise. Jakobs has played two matches, Elage one. I am satisfied with the team's performance in the first round. Both players are ready and can contribute to the team's success.”
