Pape Thiaw : "Je suis à moitié malien, mais..."
On the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Mali, Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, faced the press. When questioned about the particular context of this West African derby, the coach was keen to dispel any ambiguity regarding the risk of emotional intensity overriding tactical discipline.
The Senegalese coach, whose roots unite the two nations, firmly reiterated his total commitment to the national colors. "We know it will be a difficult match, because it's a derby. Mali and Senegal are brother countries. I myself am half Malian and half Senegalese. However, I am a professional and I am 1000% with Senegal, because I am the coach of this team," he declared.
Qualification comes first
For Pape Thiaw, while the historical ties between the two peoples are undeniable, the reality on the ground demands a pragmatic approach. He emphasized the need to mobilize all sporting resources to overcome this major obstacle in the competition.
“In a derby, there are many ingredients that come into play, but our objective is clear: to go as far as possible in this tournament. Against a team like Mali, it will not be easy, but it is up to us to put all the elements in our favor to obtain this qualification,” he insisted.
