Real Madrid: Alvaro Arbeloa contredit Mbappé
Kylian Mbappé's media appearance after Real Madrid's 2-0 victory against Real Oviedo quickly sparked reactions. A substitute at the start of Thursday night's match, the French striker claimed that his coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, had told him he had become the "fourth striker" in the Madrid squad.
A statement quickly denied by the Spanish coach in a press conference. "I would like to have four strikers but I don't. I never said that to Mbappé. He probably misunderstood," Arbeloa asserted, visibly surprised by his player's remarks.
The Real Madrid coach then justified his decision to leave the French international on the bench by citing physical and squad management reasons. According to him, Mbappé was just returning from a physical problem and was not yet able to start the match without risk. "Four days ago, he wasn't even fit enough to be on the bench. With another match three days later, I didn't want to take any risks," explained the former Real Madrid defender.
Alvaro Arbeloa also emphasized that he fully stood by his sporting decisions. "I decide who plays and who doesn't," he stated, while assuring that Kylian Mbappé should regain his starting position for Real Madrid's next match.
