A major chapter in Real Madrid's history has come to a close. On Monday, the Madrid club officially announced the departure of its captain Dani Carvajal at the end of his contract next June, bringing to a close sixteen years of an exceptional adventure in the white jersey.
In a statement, Real Madrid paid tribute to their iconic right-back: "Real Madrid and their captain Dani Carvajal have agreed to end a wonderful adventure with our club at the end of the current season. Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football."
Having come through the club's youth system, Carvajal leaves behind an immense list of achievements and an indelible mark on Real Madrid's history. With Real Madrid, the Spanish international notably won six Champions League titles and four Spanish league titles, becoming one of the symbols of the club's golden years.
At 34, the defender will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao, on the last day of La Liga. A special tribute will be paid to him by the Madrid fans to celebrate the career of a player who has become a true Bernabéu legend.
