Régis Bogaert : « Ma rupture avec Aliou Cissé… »
In an interview with L'Observateur, Régis Bogaert, co-architect of Senegal's first continental title in 2022, looks back emotionally on the end of his time with the Senegalese national team. The former assistant to Aliou Cissé breaks his silence on the breakdown in his relationship with the man he had worked alongside for a decade, before Pape Thiaw's appointment.
After ten years of partnership, the bond between the two men seems to have broken following Bogaert's departure in 2024. The French coach does not hide his "sorrow" at the almost total absence of exchanges with "El Tactico" since then.
“My ambition was to accompany Aliou and experience something unforgettable. He had trouble understanding my desire to leave. Since then, our exchanges have been very minimal… and I miss that relationship,” he admits bitterly.
The reasons for a departure poorly understood by Cissé
Aged 64, Régis Bogaert explains that he experienced physical and mental fatigue due to a demanding schedule, divided between his duties in Senegal and his coaching activities in France. Having reached the end of his contract, he had chosen to "take a break," a decision that the former Lions coach reportedly perceived as an abandonment: "Aliou Cissé wanted me to continue, but for me, after ten years, I needed to step back. I think I underestimated the impact this could have on the coach. Perhaps that was my mistake."
Despite this personal sadness, Bogaert remains proud of the legacy left behind. According to him, Senegal's successes, particularly against Egypt, are based on the "strength of ties" and the rigor instilled during their tenure. Paying tribute to leaders like Cheikhou Kouyaté, he calls on the new generation to preserve this culture of striving for victory.
