Sanctionné pour avoir trop fêté la victoire du Sénégal à la CAN: l'improbable histoire d'un coach en Belgique
In Belgium, a rather unexpected sporting sanction is currently making headlines. Ibrahima Sonko, a member of the OH Leuven staff, has been demoted by the club's management. The reason? Celebrating Senegal's victory in the Africa Cup of Nations final with excessive enthusiasm the day after his club suffered a crucial defeat.
The story takes place on Sunday evening. While the OH Leuven team bus, having lost 1-0 to Sint-Truiden, is shrouded in gloom after a defeat that puts the team in serious danger of relegation to the Belgian First Division, Ibrahima Sonko has his eyes glued to another match. The former defender for the Lions of Teranga is watching the Africa Cup of Nations final between his country, Senegal, and Morocco.
The thrilling match in Rabat, culminating in Pape Gueye's winning goal, sparked a whirlwind of emotions for Sonko. At the final whistle, the former Grenoble player, overjoyed, began celebrating the Senegalese victory "by singing and dancing," reports the Belgian newspaper *Het Nieuwsblad*. This display of joy, in stark contrast to the prevailing bitterness, was reportedly poorly received by the Leuven players, who complained to the club's management.
The management's response was firm. According to the Belgian press, Ibrahima Sonko, whose role was to support the first team and facilitate the integration of young talents, was demoted. He will now only be in charge of the U23 team, a drastic decision for excessive celebrations deemed inappropriate.
