Sénégal-Égypte : le message pointu de l’ancien bras droit de Aliou Cissé à Pape Thiaw et aux Lions

Senegal faces Egypt in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations this Wednesday in Tangier (4 pm GMT). It's a rematch between two old acquaintances: the Lions and the Pharaohs clashed in the final of the 2021 AFCON and then in the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup, with the Lions emerging victorious each time. There's a sense of revenge in the air. The winner will play the final against the winner of the Morocco-Nigeria semi-final, the other semi-final. Having witnessed the last two encounters between Egypt and Senegal firsthand, as assistant to Aliou Cissé, then national team coach, Régis Bogaert has warned Pape Thiaw's men about two weaknesses: defensive fragility and offensive inefficiency.

“We’ll have to be careful [of defensive fragility],” the coach warned. “A team like Egypt is just waiting for that to exploit in transition. We’ll have to be very vigilant and very precise. The coach will give instructions regarding imbalances, but Gana will certainly play relatively deep to start the match. I think he [Pape Thiaw] will forbid both full-backs from pushing forward at the same time, because if you let them both go forward at the same time, it opens up a lot of space on the flanks. If Egypt plays with two strikers, Marmoush and Salah, the spaces on the wings could be used to gain speed and thus force our center-backs out of the middle. When they start pushing the center-backs out of the middle, there can be danger very quickly.”

Regarding attacking play, Régis Bogaert recommends putting the ball in the back of the net or out of bounds. He elaborates: “If there’s one thing that’s important against Egypt, it’s that you have to finish your attacks. And the best way to do that is to score a goal. But if you don’t score, you have to finish the attack, even if it means the ball might, for example, go out of bounds. If you finish the attack, we’re organized and you’re not unbalanced. On the other hand, if you don’t finish the attack, if you lose possession, then there can be danger. Against Egypt, you have to be clinical.”
