Sénégal - France : Didier Deschamps donne un indice à Pape Thiaw
In exactly one month, Senegal will make their debut at the 2026 World Cup. They will face France at MetLife Stadium in New York. This clash is reminiscent of the opening match of the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, which the Lions of Teranga won 1-0.
One month before this crucial match, French national team coach Didier Deschamps has unveiled his squad for the world's biggest football tournament. There are a few surprises, such as Robin Risser, but the usual suspects are all there: Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Aurélien Tchouameni. However, Deschamps' list already gives Pape Thiaw a clue about the Senegal-France clash. Indeed, the French coach has only called up five midfielders. This means that the French will play with a double pivot and a four-man attack.
Following Deschamps' squad announcement, several French pundits pointed out his intentions. "It's clear now, Didier Deschamps is going to play with two midfielders and four forwards," noted Eric Blanc. A system that delights Johan Micoud, former French international and pundit on the L'Equipe channel. "We're going to have a blast. Even if he gets knocked out despite playing well, I'll be the first to defend him," declared the former Werder Bremen player. For Olivier Rouyer, a former star of Les Bleus, it will be good to experiment with this system during the group stage because, according to him, the competition will begin in the round of 32 for the French team.
Senegal and Pape Thiaw have been warned, France has a strong chance of starting the 2026 World Cup with a formidable attacking quartet composed of Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise and Désiré Doué.
