Le Sénégal : futur premier champion du monde africain selon Tom Saintfiet
In an interview with Record, Mali's national team coach, Tom Saintfiet, reflected on Senegal's run to the final, where they defeated Morocco 1-0. Despite his team's elimination in the quarterfinals by the Lions of Teranga, the coach had nothing but praise for the African champions.
"One of the best teams in the world"
For Saintfiet, Senegal has proven its supremacy by reaching three finals in the last four editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. According to him, Mali's 1-0 quarter-final defeat remains "respectable," especially considering his players played with 10 men for 50 minutes. Although he regrets a penalty not awarded to the Eagles, the former Belgian footballer turned coach acknowledges the collective strength of Pape Thiaw's men, "from the goalkeeper to the forwards."
A global destiny
The sports daily's interviewee goes further in his analysis: beyond the continent, he sees this Senegalese team as the ideal candidate to break the international glass ceiling. In his words, "Senegal can be the first African country to win the World Cup," highlighting the exceptional quality of the squad playing at the highest European level.
