Football Sénégal : le championnat local se vide de ses talents malgré le sacre continental
A week after the Lions' historic victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Senegalese football returns to the daily grind of its domestic competitions. But behind the national euphoria, a worrying observation emerges: the league is still struggling to retain its best players, who are forced to seek opportunities abroad, often in less prestigious leagues.
As reigning African champions, Senegal has cemented its place among the continent's football elite. However, this resounding success of the national team is not fully reflected at the club level. For several weeks now, the departures of Senegalese players have been increasing, further weakening a league already struggling for stability and competitiveness.
The latest example is Insa Boye, a promising playmaker from the Diambars FC Academy, who chose to pursue his career in Albania after signing a contract with a local club. Before him, Libasse Gueye (Teungueth FC) joined Simba SC in Tanzania, Serigne Moctar Koita (Jaraaf) moved to Lebanon, while Pape Aboubacar Diop, also from Teungueth FC, joined the Tunisian league. These are just some of the locally trained talents who leave the country, often very early in their careers, in search of better professional opportunities.
These mass departures, sometimes to clubs of lesser sporting stature, highlight the financial and structural limitations of Senegalese clubs. Unable to offer attractive salaries, secure contracts, or solid medium-term sporting projects, they see their best players succumb to the allure of foreign clubs.
In a context where Senegalese football shines at the pinnacle of African football, this situation raises questions. The national team's performance should serve as a catalyst for strengthening local football. Senegalese football leaders are now being called upon to act: it is becoming urgent to consider new strategies to support clubs, improve their governance, increase their resources, and enable them to be competitive, both nationally and in African interclub competitions. Without a strong and attractive league, Senegal's continental dominance risks relying indefinitely on the early export of its talent, to the detriment of the local development of the game.
