Combat annoncé entre Tyson et Mayweather : Et si "Iron Mike" allait se reposer ?
He likes to say he has nothing to prove to anyone but himself. And that's pretty true. Mike Tyson has a long list of achievements. He has been a world champion several times and remains to this day the first boxer on the planet to unify the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles in the heavyweight division.
Throughout his career, he has only suffered 7 defeats for 50 victories, 44 of which were by KO. The Brooklyn native is, without a doubt, a legend of the ring.
Tired, harmless
When he announced his retirement in 2005, after a surprising defeat against Irishman Kevin McBride, few people suspected that Iron Mike would return to the ring 19 years later. But he did.
On November 15, 2024, the American legend faced Jake Paul at AT & T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The YouTuber, 31 years his junior, defeated him in the 8th round in a lackluster fight.
Apart from an initial punch landed squarely on the videographer's face at the start of the explanation, Mike Tyson appeared tired and harmless, mostly just avoiding the blows thrown by his opponent.
His defeat was not really a surprise given the age difference between him and Paul.
In 2024, the boxer was 58 years old. This year he will be 60, quite old to be considered for a boxing match. But you absolutely shouldn't talk like that to Iron Mike.
Health problems
This Wednesday, it was announced that he will fight an exhibition match with Floyd Mayweather in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) next April. A nod to the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali in 1974.
Knowing that "Kid Dynamite" is no longer in the best shape, one might wonder why he still agrees to take hits in a ring.
It's worth remembering that he suffers from chronic sciatica. Even before his fight against Jake Paul, he had been treated for a stomach ulcer. He himself stated that he had a near-death experience.
"I almost died in June. I had eight blood transfusions. I lost half my blood and 11 kg in the hospital and I had to fight to get fit to fight," the American boxing legend said.
An exhibition match against a ring monster
His health problems aren't surprising given his age. We want to believe he's driven by passion, not greed. Let's not forget he pocketed a cool $20 million in his last fight.
The stakes for the next exhibition fight against Floyd Mayweather are unknown, but it could be one fight too many, especially against a formidable champion who has not lost any of his fights in his career.
The man nicknamed "Pretty Boy" is a true monster in the ring. Mike Tyson should really consider taking a break.
