Un troisième footballeur assassiné en Equateur
An Ecuadorian professional footballer was killed in an armed attack on Friday, bringing to three the number of footballers killed in the country since the beginning of September, police said.
Jonathan González, 31, a former player of Olimpia in Paraguay and León in Mexico, who played for the 22 de Julio team (second division), suffered "gunshot wounds," police said. A second victim, who has not been identified, died while being taken to hospital.
The attack occurred in a house in the coastal province of Esmeraldas, on the border with Colombia, which is plagued by clashes between drug trafficking gangs.
A total of three footballers were killed in September as a result of violence.
On September 10, Maicol Valencia and Leandro Yépez, players of the Exapromo Costa team (2nd division), were killed in an armed attack in the coastal city of Manta (southwest).
According to the club, the footballers were collateral victims, as they were not the target of the attack.
In Ecuador, homicides have risen from 6 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2018 to 38 in 2024, with a record high of 47 in 2023. The country was once considered a safe haven between Colombia and Peru, the world's largest cocaine producers.
