« Une nation, c’est pas un club… » : Aurélien Chedjou d’accord avec la non sélection de Malang Sarr pour le Mondial
Despite a very successful season with RC Lens, Malang Sarr, the Sang et Or's central defender, was not called up by Senegal's national team coach Pape Thiaw for the 2026 World Cup in America. This exclusion has generated considerable discussion and debate.
Several sports commentators or simply football enthusiasts believe that the Nice native had his place in this Lions' den given his fine season in Ligue 1.
"Perhaps he was waiting for a phone call from another nation."
Aurélien Chédjou disagrees. The former Cameroonian international, a commentator on the Canal+ program "Les Grandes Bouches," believes that Pape Thiaw should not be blamed at all, since Malang Sarr's first choice was clearly not Senegal. Therefore, according to him, priority should be given to the players who have built the Lions' reputation in recent years.
“Perhaps he was waiting for a call from another nation. I think those who have put Senegal on the map today – Coulibaly, Niakhaté – should be rewarded. They also had a good season. Malang Sarr performed well, that’s clear, but that criterion is important. A nation isn’t a club where you have to negotiate to find a contract, etc. Either you want to leave, or you don’t,” the former LOSC defender declared.
For him, it's essential to give a chance to the Lions who have been there for a while, and especially to the young generation coming up. It's worth remembering that Malang Sarr played for France's youth teams.
