Victoire à la CAN 2025 : Pathé Ciss célébré, le président Rayo Vallecano sifflé
More than a month after Senegal's victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Rayo Vallecano officially celebrated the continental title won by their midfielder Pathé Ciss. The Senegalese player was honored this Saturday, a few minutes before kickoff of the match against Athletic Bilbao, for the 26th round of LaLiga.
Returning to the Vallecas stadium for the first time since their 3-1 defeat against CA Osasuna on January 24th, the Madrid club had a major expectation to meet: to pay tribute to their African champion. The issue had been a hot topic among fans for several weeks, particularly on social media, where many Senegalese were calling for official recognition.
Rayo Vallecano's management finally organized a simple but symbolic ceremony. The former Diambars player, who will be playing his 161st match for the Madrid club this Saturday, received a commemorative plaque and a special jersey bearing the inscription “Campeón AFCON 2025”. The gift was presented to him by club president Raúl Martín Presa, to applause from some of the fans.
This gesture puts an end to a controversy that arose upon his return from the Africa Cup of Nations. The club had explained the delay by citing the lack of home matches since the end of the continental tournament, preventing any public celebrations before that date.
Applause… and whistles
While the fans warmly greeted their African champion, the atmosphere wasn't entirely harmonious. Chants of "Pathé yes, Presa no" rose from the stands, reflecting the discontent of a segment of the public towards the president, whom they held responsible for the delay in organizing the tribute.
Despite this tension, the evening will remain symbolic for Pathé Ciss, now enshrined in the club's history as African champion 2025. An expected recognition, which further strengthens the bond between the Senegalese midfielder and the Vallecas supporters.
