Vinícius Júnior charge après Benfica–Real : « Les racistes sont des lâches »
In the wake of UEFA's opening of an investigation following the Champions League play-off between Benfica and Real Madrid (0-1), Vinícius Júnior has broken his silence.
On his Instagram account, the Brazilian winger denounced the racist insults he believes he suffered during the match. "Racists are, first and foremost, cowards; they need to pull their jerseys over their mouths to show how weak they are. But they also have the protection of others, who, theoretically, have an obligation to punish them," he wrote.
Without explicitly naming the European governing body, the Real Madrid player seems to be targeting UEFA, lamenting "a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose." This is a direct criticism of the anti-discrimination measures meant to be applied in the event of an incident during a match.
Having become accustomed, despite himself, to denouncing racist acts against him in recent seasons, Vinícius Júnior is once again raising his voice. His message, widely shared on social media, is putting pressure on the governing bodies of European football, who are being urged to take firm action if the allegations are confirmed.
The investigation launched by UEFA will now have to determine responsibilities and decide on possible sanctions.
