Wayne Rooney has opened up about the alcoholism that plagued him for several years. A guest on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, hosted by his former Manchester United teammate, he admitted to having developed a " toxic relationship with alcohol." A precipice from which his wife Coleen was able to rescue him. " I honestly believe that if she hadn't been there, I would be dead ," said the former England international (120 caps, 53 goals).
"I wanted to go out, enjoy my friends and have a good night out ," added Rooney, 39, agreeing to return to this dark side of his life. "I ended up going too far, of course. I was going through a very difficult time ."
The element at the center of his torment? " Alcohol , " he replied immediately. " I was in a lot of trouble and I didn't think I could confide in anyone. I didn't really want to, because I didn't want to put that burden on anyone. I remember going to training, putting drops in my eyes and chewing gum. I had been drinking for two days straight ."
