Weekend for Senegalese abroad: Nicolas Jackson and Sambou Soumano shine, Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly and Ismaïla Sarr cause concern

Week-end des Sénégalais de l’étranger : Nicolas Jackson et Sambou Soumano brillent, Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly et Ismaïla Sarr inquiètent

Three weeks before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, it was a mixed weekend for the Lions playing abroad. While Nicolas Jackson and Sambou Soumano distinguished themselves by scoring, injuries to Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly and Ismaïla Sarr cast a shadow over the team and worried the national team staff.

French Ligue 1

The weekend begins in France where Ibrahim Mbaye, who came on in the 76th minute with Paris Saint-Germain, lost in Monaco (1-0) against the team of Lamine Camara and Krépin Diatta, who came on in the 65th minute.

At home, Metz lost to Stade Rennais (0-1). While Habib Diallo was absent, Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly went off injured in the 19th minute, bad news for Les Grenats.

Strasbourg, with Mamadou Sarr in the starting lineup, lost to Stade Brestois (1-2).

Thanks to a brace from Sambou Soumano, Lorient defeated Nice 3-1. For Lorient, Bamba Dieng came on in the 77th minute while goalkeeper Bingourou Kamara remained on the bench.

Le Havre, with its strong Senegalese contingent (Rassoul Ndiaye, Arouna Sangaré, Mory Diaw and Issa Soumaré), was beaten at home by Lille (0-1).

Abdallah Sima, who came on in the 78th minute, participated in Lens' victory in Angers (2-1).

At Groupama Stadium, Lyon, with Moussa Niakhaté, beat Nantes (3-0).

In Ligue 2, Paris FC, with Moustapha Mbow in the starting lineup, were held to a draw by Auxerre (1-1).

England

In the Premier League, the 13th matchday was marked by the injury of Ismaïla Sarr during Crystal Palace's defeat against Manchester United (1-2).

Everton, with Iliman Ndiaye but without the suspended Gana Guèye, suffered a heavy defeat against Newcastle (1-4).

Pape Matar Sarr, who came on in the 77th minute, could not prevent Tottenham from losing the derby against Fulham (1-2).

Still injured, Habib Diarra did not participate in Sunderland's victory against Bournemouth (3-2).

El Hadji Malick Diouf, starting for West Ham, lost to Liverpool (0-2).

Spain

In La Liga, Pape Gueye's Villarreal secured a 3-2 victory away at Real Sociedad. The Senegalese midfielder played 68 minutes.

Rayo Vallecano, featuring Nobel Mendy and Pathé Ciss, plays this Monday.

Italy

In Serie A (13th matchday), Lazio, with Boulaye Dia in the starting lineup, lost to AC Milan (1-0).

Hellas Verona, with Cheikh Tidiane Niasse in the starting lineup, were beaten by Genoa (2-1).

Como, without Assane Diao, dominated Sassuolo (2-0).

Idrissa Guèye, who remained on the bench, did not participate in Parma's victory, while Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye was absent.

Mikayil Ngor Faye's Cremonese team plays in Bologna this Monday.

Türkiye

In Super Lig (14th day), Galatasaray with Ismaïl Jakobs and Samsunspor with Chérif Ndiaye play this Monday.

Belgium

In Jupiler Pro League (16th matchday), Anderlecht, with Ilay Camara in the starting lineup before giving way to Moussa Ndiaye in the 64th minute, beat Union Saint-Gilloise, with Ousseynou Niang (1-0).

Saudi Arabia

In the quarter-finals of the Champions Cup, Kalidou Koulibaly's Al Hilal won convincingly against Al Fateh (4-1).

Al Ahly, with Édouard Mendy, eliminated Al Qadsiah (3-3, 5-4 on penalties).
