Visite de travail du président de l’AIPS/Afrique en Gambie : Banjul prête à accueillir la presse sportive africaine
Following a visit to Nouakchott last June, the president of the International Sports Press Association for Africa (AIPS/Africa), Senegalese journalist Abdoulaye Thiam, continued his tour in Banjul, the Gambian capital. The working visit included meetings with local authorities, including President Adama Barrow, as well as the Ministers of Communication and Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, and Youth and Sports, Bacary Badjie.
During his audience with President Barrow, Mr. Thiam praised Gambia's regional leadership, recently demonstrated by the successful organization of major summits such as the OIC and COP9. He took the opportunity to propose the upcoming holding of the AIPS/Africa Congress in Banjul.
The proposal was enthusiastically welcomed by the Gambian Head of State, who gave his immediate approval, while asking AIPS/Africa to inform him as soon as possible of the dates and practical arrangements for the event. President Barrow also expressed his desire to open the doors of Gambia to the African and international sports press, in a dynamic of promoting Gambian know-how and interpersonal skills.
In his discussions with the Minister of Communication and Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Abdoulaye Thiam emphasized the need to build the capacities of young sports journalists. He highlighted the contemporary challenges of disinformation and artificial intelligence, which he considers not as a threat, but as a tool to be mastered without ever losing sight of the very essence of journalism: the collection, processing, and dissemination of reliable information.
Dr. Ceesay pledged his department's support, announcing the upcoming signing of a partnership agreement between the ministry and the Sports Journalists' Association of The Gambia (SJAG). This represents a decisive step toward boosting the sports press ecosystem in Gambia.
With the presidential approval for the organization of the congress in Banjul, Gambia is firmly positioning itself as a future continental crossroads for sports journalism.
