With just days to go before the kickoff of the next two qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup, bad news has arrived for South Africa, which has been deducted three points.
FIFA opened an investigation into Teboho Mokoena's line-up in the 2-0 defeat to Lesotho on March 21, while the midfielder was suspended after receiving two yellow cards. South Africa was ultimately found guilty of violating Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the Qualifying Regulations.
The result: a resounding defeat, relegating Bafana Bafana to second place in Group C with 14 points. In an official statement, FIFA declared South Africa the loser of this match with a score of 3-0 (Matchday 5). In addition, the South African federation will have to pay a fine of CHF 10,000 (approximately €10,600).
This verdict completely rekindles the suspense in Group C, two days before the end of the qualifiers. Benin took advantage of this sanction to take the lead in the standings (14 points), while South Africa dropped to second place. Benin therefore finds itself in first place before its two "finals" against Rwanda and Nigeria (9th and 10th days).
For its part, Nigeria, which had long struggled in the race for qualification, now finds itself back in the battle for a place at the World Cup.

Les officiels (arbitres et commissaire) vérifient juste l'identité des joueurs. C'est à la fédération de veiller a ce qu'un joueur suspendu ne joue pas
