Audition à la fédé de lutte : « Je ne savais pas pour le Coran »
Summoned by the Senegalese Wrestling Federation (FSL), Doudou Sané explained the presence of Quranic verses inscribed on his loincloth during his last fight. Interviewed by Record, he pleaded good faith, stating unequivocally: "I didn't know it was the Quran."
The wrestler clarified the content of his exchange with the governing body: "The FSL asked me if I knew it was from the Quran. I replied that I didn't. I didn't know they were verses from the Quran. [...] It should be noted that I haven't learned the Quran. So, I thought they were writings intended to protect me, quite simply."
Keen to dispel any suspicion of provocation, Doudou Sané firmly rejected any intention of harming his faith: “As a Muslim, I would never knowingly tarnish the image of the religion.” He also acknowledged his lack of familiarity with the rules, explaining that he “didn’t know that the rules prohibited such a practice.” While he knew that photos of marabouts were forbidden, he was unaware that the prohibition extended to sacred texts: “I knew that photos of marabouts were forbidden in the arena. But not Quranic verses. I simply placed it within a mystical context.”
Deeply affected by the outrage sparked on social media, the wrestler concluded his statement on a note of regret. Claiming to have learned from this unfortunate incident, the interviewee with the sports daily reassured his fans and the religious community, declaring, "From now on, I will never do it again." This hearing, he said, allowed him to realize the seriousness of a practice he admits to having adopted solely out of ignorance.
