Xavi Simons (Pays-Bas) forfait pour le Mondial
Dutch international attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, who injured his right knee on Saturday, announced that he would not be able to finish the season with Tottenham, who are fighting to avoid relegation from the Premier League, and that he would also miss the World Cup this summer.
"They say life can be cruel and today that's how I feel. My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm trying to accept it. Honestly, it breaks my heart," the 23-year-old wrote on social media Sunday night.
"All I wanted was to fight with my team and now I am deprived of that just as I am deprived of the World Cup. Representing my country this summer is over," continued the player with 34 caps for the Netherlands.
Simons, presumably suffering from a cruciate ligament injury in his right knee, left the field limping on Saturday during Tottenham's crucial 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton in their fight to stay in the Premier League.
With four games left in the season, Spurs are 18th in the English league, two points away from securing their survival.
The World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, begins on June 11. The Netherlands are in Group F with Japan, Sweden and Tunisia.
