Sunday's Senegal-Morocco match (7pm GMT), the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, pits two teams against each other, boasting a wealth of talent. Among them are the goalkeepers: Édouard Mendy for the Lions of Teranga and Yassine Bounou for the Atlas Lions.
After stints at the highest level in Europe, these goalkeepers have moved to Saudi Arabia. The first, formerly of Chelsea, guards the goal for Al-Ahli; the second, formerly of Sevilla, plays for Al-Hilal FC.
For goalkeeping expert Oumar Diallo, the similarities between the two players don't end there; in terms of skills, they're identical. "They're very similar," he stated in an interview published this Saturday in L'Observateur, where he was asked to analyze the playing style of the Senegalese and Moroccan goalkeepers.
SERENITY
“What I already like about these two goalkeepers is their composure. It’s something very important for a goalkeeper who always has a dominant team. It shows that they are top-level goalkeepers. They’re there at the right time, when the team needs them. Édouard saved us three or four times with crucial saves. That shows that he’s an international goalkeeper, and it’s not for nothing that he was the best goalkeeper in the world. Bounou is the same. He’s very composed, very calm. And apart from the saves they make, they are two great personalities.”
DECISIVE
“They have more time to play with their feet than to dive. They have two or three saves to make per match. […] Bounou, apart from the small mistake he made against Tanzania, handles all the other balls well. Édouard is the same. It was only against the DRC that he dived five times, if I'm not mistaken. But all the rest, it's one or two times where he makes a save.”
AERIAL BULLETS
"They are very good on crosses and aerial balls. There was a moment when we had some doubts about Édouard. But we saw that on certain aerial balls, he really calms us down, reassures us. So, with Bounou, it's the same style."
FOOT GAME
"That's the key to differentiating them. [Diallo gives the advantage to Bounou] Because Morocco plays the ball out from the back. Whereas for us, people don't come after us. Our opponents are always behind. Ais Édouard has improved a lot with his kicking game, especially in the middle of the field."
PENALTY SHOOTOUTS
“ [Regarding Bounou’s supposed advantage, who won his team the penalty shootout against Nigeria in the semi-final] We won the Africa Cup of Nations on penalties. Édouard saved the penalty that was needed. So, we can be confident in that respect. If we reach that level, we won’t have any fears. Everything will depend on the quality of the opposing penalty takers.”

BIO: Oumar Diallo guarded the Lions' goal between the late 1990s and early 2000s before being relegated to the bench by Tony Sylva. He spent the majority of his playing career at the Moroccan club Khouribga before taking on the role of goalkeeping coach and trainer there.
