Fleuve Gambie : légère remontée à Kédougou mais tendance générale à la baisse dans le bassin

The latest hydrological bulletin published this Monday by the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade reveals a mixed situation in the Gambia River basin. While a moderate rise in water levels has been observed in Kédougou, the overall trend remains downward at several monitored hydrometric stations.

Tributaries in decline

Measurements taken this morning at 8 a.m. indicate a decrease in water levels in most tributaries.

In Diaguiri, the water level reached 2.56 m, compared to 2.58 m the day before, a slight drop of 2 cm. This level remains much lower than that recorded at the same time last year (5.93 m).

The Afia Pont station (Thiokoye) did not report any data this morning, but the previous day's measurement indicated 2.17 m, compared to 5.91 m in October 2024.

In Niokolo Koba, the situation remains stable with a slight rise of 1 cm (5.64 m compared to 5.63 m yesterday). However, this level remains well below that observed last year (9.28 m).

On the Diahra Pont side, the daily readings did not reach the scale, just like in Sinthiou Malème and Goumbayel, where the trend remains unchanged.

The Gambia River is rising slightly at Kédougou

The Kédougou station shows a notable rise of 21 cm in 24 hours, with a level measured at 3.72 m compared to 3.51 m yesterday. Despite this improvement, the river remains far from its alert level set at 7 meters, and well below the level observed on the same date in 2024 (5.68 m).

Levels still low in Mako, Simenti and Gouloumbou

The Mako station recorded a drop of 3 cm, with 3.44 m measured this morning. In comparison, the river reached 5.59 m at the same time last year.

At Simenti, the day's data are not yet available, but the previous day's measurement showed a level of 6.49 m, far from the record of 13.21 m recorded in October 2024. The alert level at this station is set at 13 meters.

Finally, in Gouloumbou, the decline continues: 8.83 m this morning compared to 9.12 m yesterday, a drop of 29 cm in 24 hours. Here again, the river remains below the alert level (12 m) and the level observed last year (11.94 m).

Water levels generally lower than in 2024

Throughout the Gambia River Basin, water levels observed in October 2025 remain significantly lower than those of the previous year, reflecting a less abundant hydrological period.

The hydrological services continue their daily monitoring, particularly in Kédougou and Gouloumbou, two strategic areas of the basin, in order to anticipate any significant changes in the water regime.
