[Gamou Tivaouane 2025] Respect du code de la route, port du casque : La Police annonce une « tolérance zéro »
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Faced with the increase in road accidents during religious ceremonies (more than twenty deaths on the Touba road in 2025), the National Police is determined to crack down without compromise. With an impressive force of 3,323 police officers and 187 vehicles deployed in Tivaouane for the safety of people and property, the Public Security Directorate (DSP) intends to combat, with tenacity and relentlessness, bad behavior on the roads, which is often the cause of fatal accidents.
"Motorists are being called upon to strictly observe the Highway Code to avoid road accidents. In the same vein, motorcyclists are urged to ensure they wear helmets, for which, we would like to point out, zero tolerance will be applied. The National Police will be uncompromising," declared Chief Commissioner Safiétou Mbaye, head of the Thiès Regional Public Security, at a press conference on the eve of Gamou, this Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
As of the first day of the major religious event, 16 traffic accidents have been reported, but no loss of life has been reported - for the moment. This is certainly due to the commitment of the Police on the ground, which had to impound 25 vehicles and 67 motorcycles that do not meet road traffic requirements. Also, 498 pieces of information related to the driving of the vehicles were seized.
In addition, police officers under the command of Chief Superintendent Mbaye arrested 197 people, including 96 for identity checks, 9 for theft, 4 for possession and use of drugs, 4 for theft committed at night in a group, 8 for public and obvious drunkenness, among others. These security operations, launched well before the start of the Buur, will continue until the day after the event with a carefully thought-out organization.
"The police's area of jurisdiction has been divided into 10 sectors based on sensitivity and traffic. To strengthen the security network and address the concerns of the population, six outposts have been set up," said the police officer, who also announced the installation of two medical posts "to provide free care and medication to the population."
