Internet haut débit de Starlink : La contre-offensive d'Orange
Starlink, a subsidiary of Elon Musk's SpaceX, has launched in 25 African countries, including Senegal a month ago. With its high-speed satellite internet, Starlink aims to directly compete with Orange, which has clearly dominated the market in several African countries in recent years. But Orange has no intention of giving up easily.
According to reports in Jeune Afrique, the French telecommunications company plans to launch a counter-offensive... on Starlink's home turf: broadband internet via satellite. The service has been named Orange Sat. "We consider satellite to be complementary to our mobile and fixed broadband networks [...]. We aim to deploy satellite solutions across all our geographic areas because this corresponds to the natural evolution of the market," Christel Heydemann, CEO of the group, which operates in 17 African countries, told Jeune Afrique.
For the moment, only Ivory Coast benefits from Orange Sat (in collaboration with Eutelsat). In Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, and other Ivorian cities, Orange Sat has enabled speeds of up to 50 megabits per second, reports the pan-African newspaper. Orange Sat is expected to expand to other African countries, notably Senegal.
For Mandiaye Diallo, an innovation consultant and author of the book "The Fourth Wound: Why Africa Must Win the Digital War," high-speed satellite internet was the logical next step for Orange. But competing with Starlink in this area won't be easy. "Orange can't afford to let another player capture the market share in such a strategic segment, which clearly foreshadows the network architecture of tomorrow (...) If we stick strictly to satellite internet, Orange will likely have difficulties in this segment. Starlink already benefits from an image of advanced, almost 'glamorous' technology and has a head start since it has already begun marketing its antennas," explains Mandiaye Diallo.
Note that Starlink has the largest satellite constellation in the world with more than 6,750 satellites in low Earth orbit.
