Starlink au Sénégal : ce qui va changer, Orange et compagnie sous pression
When questioned by L'Observateur about the arrival of Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, in Senegal, cybersecurity expert Mamadou Kor highlighted a delicate debate between technological advancement and issues of sovereignty.
According to him, Starlink can be a powerful driver of digital inclusion by connecting rural and isolated areas, often neglected by fiber optics and 4G. This new offering is also likely to stimulate competition, pushing local operators to improve the quality of their services and revise their prices.
But the expert also warns of major risks. The main sticking point concerns digital sovereignty, particularly the control and security of data transiting through a foreign satellite constellation, which poses serious regulatory challenges.
In addition, the newspaper's source emphasizes the high cost of the service, which could exacerbate the digital divide by limiting it to a minority. Finally, established operators denounce the risk of unfair competition, arguing that Starlink could operate under less stringent regulatory constraints than those imposed on them.
