Anarchie et arrestations : Comment les autorités comptent nettoyer le secteur de l'eau en sachet
The fight against the illegal production of sachet water has reached a decisive stage in the Thiès region. Following the dismantling of a vast clandestine network in the railway city, an operation that led to the arrest of five individuals, the authorities initiated an emergency consultation meeting to sustainably clean up this strategic sector.
As part of this ongoing effort to curb the illegal operation of manufacturing facilities, a meeting was held this Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in Thiès. Organized by the Regional Hygiene Brigade and the Regional Trade Service on the instructions of the public prosecutor's office, this meeting brought together the main players in production and distribution.
Speaking at the event, Saliou Sall, coordinator of the Collective of Filtered Water Stakeholders in Senegal (CAES-THIÈS), praised the authorities' decisive action. He explained that the dismantling of the clandestine network followed a complaint filed with the public prosecutor at the Thiès High Court by industry professionals themselves, who were deeply concerned by the proliferation of illegal units that were jeopardizing public health.
Mr. Sall explained that the stakeholders knew such units existed, but that their role had thus far been limited to raising the alarm. Referring the matter to the prosecutor triggered a rigorous investigation, leading to the arrests reported by Seneweb. During the discussions, several avenues were explored to end the chaos, including a comprehensive census of production units in the region's three departments.
The CAES coordinator lamented a blatant deterioration of the situation in recent years. In 2020, 83 processing units were officially registered in the city of Thiès. However, since the suspension of permits, more than 80 new units have reportedly been established completely illegally. Faced with this uncontrolled expansion, stakeholders are now calling on the government to implement a regularization process to guarantee the sanitary quality of products and establish fairer competition.
