Clôture de l’exposition “Première Ligne” : Un devoir de mémoire pour la jeunesse sénégalaise

The Museum of Black Civilizations hosted the closing ceremony of the “Front Line” exhibition, initiated by Abdou Karim Ndoye, Special Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic and photographer.

The event, chaired by Ministers Moustapha Mamba Guirassy (National Education) and Amadou Ba (Culture, Crafts and Tourism), pays tribute to young Senegalese involved in the events of 2021-2024.

Through his photographs, Abdou Karim Ndoye immortalizes these moments to recall the duty of remembrance and the importance of peace and civic values, thus offering a powerful visual testimony of this period when many young Senegalese distinguished themselves “on the front line” to defend democracy and freedom.

“Première Ligne is an exhibition to pay tribute to these young people who risked, sometimes sacrificed their lives for their country,” the photographer recalled.

A vibrant tribute to Senegalese youth

The Minister of Culture, Amadou Ba, praised “the bravery and patriotic awareness” of Senegalese youth.

“These young people have always fought for freedom and democracy. They have shown themselves to be strong in preserving peace and the republican values of our country,” he said.

In his address, the Minister of National Education, Moustapha Mamba Guirassy, hailed “an essential exercise in remembrance”, stressing that “peace is worked for and rests on the values of the nation and the homeland”.

“We congratulate Abdou Karim on this extraordinary achievement. This exhibition belongs to the nation. It is an integral part of our shared history. We narrowly escaped catastrophe. We must explain to these children that peace is cultivated, that it rests on strong values: the nation, the homeland, solidarity. Everything depends on the foundation of values upon which our education and development are based. What produces peace and prosperity is the strength of our values.”

Moustapha Mamba Guirassy also emphasized the educational and memorial significance of this exhibition by establishing a link between it and the New Initiative for the Humanistic Transformation of Schools (NITE), a flagship program of his ministry.

“It’s an exercise in remembrance, an extremely important exercise. In Africa, we tend to forget everything, to fall into the trap of the instantaneous. This duty of remembrance is crucial for children so that they understand what happened and refuse to let these events be erased from our collective consciousness.”

A duty to remember, not an apology for violence

Responding to some criticisms that the exhibition would “glorify violence”, the minister was categorical.

“That’s absurd. Showing the atrocities of slavery or colonialism has never been an apology for violence. It’s an act of lucidity and remembrance. 'Première Ligne' doesn’t glorify violence; it recalls the suffering endured, the risks taken, and the lives lost. It’s a duty of remembrance, a march of the nation.”

An artistic and civic success

The exhibition, described by its initiators as a “march of the nation”, invites young people to learn from the past to build a Senegal founded on memory, harmony and education.

Students from several schools and many cultural figures present at the ceremony praised the exceptional work of Abdou Karim Ndoye, whose works accurately capture the pain, resilience, and hope of the Senegalese people.

According to the organizers, this involvement of young people aims to pass the torch and inspire the new generation to cultivate courage, commitment and love of nation.
