Crise sociale à l’UCAD : Des étudiants contraints de se nourrir dans des conditions précaires
Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), the main center of higher education in Senegal, is going through a new period of turbulence. Since the closure of university restaurants, following the decree of days without meal tickets, many students find themselves facing a situation of great food insecurity.
Images widely shared on social media show students eating from jars, plastic bags, or other unsuitable containers. These scenes, deemed shocking by some members of the public, highlight the daily hardships faced by residents of the student housing complex.
Deprived of university meals and, for some, of scholarships, many students say they are forced to use their own resources to support themselves. This is a difficult reality to bear for young people, often from modest families, who have come from the interior of the country to pursue their studies in Dakar.
While UCAD is considered a symbol of academic excellence in West Africa, these images of student distress stand in stark contrast to the stated ambitions for Senegalese higher education. This reality, according to many stakeholders, reflects poorly on both the university and the country, and calls for swift and concrete action from the relevant authorities.
