The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, received the African Water and Sanitation Association (AWSA) Congress handover trophy on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The award was presented to him by the Director General of the National Water Company of Senegal (SONES). This gesture symbolizes the organization of the next edition of this major continental gathering, scheduled for 2028 in Dakar. The ceremony took place in the presence of ministry directors and stakeholders from the water sector.

Senegal, a leader in hydrodiplomacy

In his speech, Minister Cheikh Tidiane Dièye expressed his satisfaction, stating that this recognition was the result of the hard work of the ministry teams, SONES, experts, civil society, and the private sector. "This is a great source of pride for our country, Senegal, which is experiencing a decisive moment in its journey towards consolidating its leadership in hydrodiplomacy in our sub-region, in Africa, and on the international stage," he declared.

The minister also announced that Senegal has adopted the new African Water Vision 2063, in line with the African Union's Agenda 2063. "This is an African recognition, and Senegal will continue to consolidate this major role," he stated, recalling that 2026 has been declared the "African Year of Water." He commended the involvement of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, while also congratulating the SONES teams: "This is how we will continue to work, by joining hands and highlighting Senegalese expertise, which is recognized worldwide."

A restored image for the sector

For his part, the Director General of SONES, Abdoul Niang, emphasized the strategic importance of this distinction. "This award not only enhances Senegal's image, but also establishes a strong collaboration between institutional decision-makers within the Ministry and the CEOs of the companies," he stated. In presenting the trophy, Mr. Niang requested the Minister's continued leadership to ensure the 2028 congress is a resounding success.

The upcoming AAEA congress in Dakar will provide an opportunity for water companies across the continent to discuss crucial issues related to access to water resources and to strengthen South-South cooperation.
