He is about 35 years old, with a solid build and a strong character. In the Moroccan migration jungle, his name circulates in hushed tones: "The Guide." A nickname forged over the years, to the rhythm of nighttime departures, steep mountains, and secluded beaches that border the Mediterranean.
Arriving in Tangier almost 10 years ago with a single goal—to enter Spain—"The Guide" has become a key figure among young migrants seeking to reach Europe. He has led more than thirty expeditions. These attempts, often thwarted, were frequently perilous and always fraught with danger. His almost surgical knowledge of the nooks and crannies of the northern Moroccan mountains and strategic beaches has earned him this nickname, which inspires fear and commands respect.
Like a repentant former crime boss, "The Guide" has agreed to speak to Seneweb on condition of anonymity. He seeks neither glory nor recognition. His account is raw, devoid of romanticism, far removed from the idealized tales of the European Eldorado.
According to him, many young Senegalese leave ill-informed, blinded by the embellished stories on social media and from smugglers. Here, he has seen dreams drowned, bodies disappear, and families never hear from them again.
