GRAND MAGAL : 12 MORTS DANS 131 ACCIDENTS ROUTIERS

Firefighters reported 209 interventions, including 131 road accidents with 388 victims. The most serious accident occurred in Gandon, in Saint-Louis, with five deaths and 22 injuries in a collision between a minibus and a "Ndiaga Ndiaye" coach.

The security toll of the Grand Magal 2025 continues to worsen dramatically. According to the latest update from the fire department, emergency services carried out 209 interventions of all kinds until Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at 10 a.m., nearly double the number from the previous day. This escalation demonstrates the amplification of risks linked to the massive influx to the holy city of Touba.

Of these 209 interventions, 131 involved road traffic accidents, an alarming increase compared to the 75 accidents recorded the previous day. These incidents resulted in 388 victims, including 12 people who lost their lives, more than doubling the number of deaths in just 24 hours.

The deadliest accident in Gandon

The most tragic accident occurred on the night of August 11th to 12th, at 9:25 p.m., on the Saint-Louis road, near Gandon. This head-on collision between a Tata minibus and a "Ndiaga Ndiaye" coach left five dead and 22 seriously injured.

A message of compassion and warning

Faced with this road massacre, Commander Yatma Dièye, head of the Information and Public Relations Division of the National Fire Brigade (BNSP) has to offer "saddened condolences to all the bereaved families and pray for a speedy recovery of the injured."

Emergency services are "urging all road users to exercise greater caution," a call that takes on particular resonance in the face of the dramatic escalation in accidents.

The challenge of flooding in Touba

Alongside dealing with road accidents, firefighters are facing another major challenge: managing the floods that are hitting Touba. "Reconnaissance has been carried out since the first rains to deploy firefighters and significant resources, including motor pumps and electric pumps, to the flooded areas."

This weather situation considerably complicates the organization of the Magal, adding to the road risks dangers linked to stagnant water and the associated health risks.

"Satisfactory" results despite challenges

Regarding the fight against flooding, the assessment drawn up by the authorities is intended to be reassuring: "The results are quite satisfactory, even if pumping operations continue to provide further relief to the population."

This positive assessment contrasts with the seriousness of the road situation, demonstrating the relative effectiveness of flood prevention interventions compared to road accident prevention.

Specific safety instructions for flooding

Faced with the risks associated with stagnant water, firefighters are urging "children to avoid going near pools or wading in the water, which poses the risk of illness and also the risk of electrocution from contact with water and electricity."

Increased mobilization, 24 hours before Magal

On the eve of the main event, efforts are being focused on the most sensitive areas, "around the Grand Mosque and its surroundings, as well as on the main roads leading to the Grand Mosque." This is to ensure accessibility to the holy sites, even if it means concentrating resources on the most symbolic areas of the celebration.

25 rescue trucks as reinforcements

To address the scale of the challenges, "the Directorate for Flood Prevention and Management has made 25 rescue trucks available to the National Fire Brigade." This exceptional mobilization of resources illustrates the gravity of the situation and the commitment of the authorities. This reinforcement comes in addition to the "rapid intervention detachment with substantial resources committed to the holy city of Touba to support and assist the units of the 23rd Touba Fire and Rescue Company" deployed since the first rainfall.
