Faced with numerous forms of harassment in Mauritania, fishermen from Guet Ndar expressed their frustration with a situation they deem "unjust and unacceptable." Gathering at a press conference this Tuesday at the Guet Ndar fishing pier in Saint-Louis, they called on Senegalese authorities to intervene urgently to end the difficulties they are experiencing in Nouadhibou and other Mauritanian localities.
Speaking on behalf of his compatriots, Baye Boli Fall, representative of Senegalese fishermen in Mauritania, denounced practices he considers contrary to the historical and fraternal relations between Senegal and Mauritania. "While Senegal currently holds the presidency of the ECOWAS Commission, our relatives are suffering in Mauritania. This is incomprehensible and profoundly unjust," he declared.
According to him, the ties between the two countries are long-standing and strong, noting that many Senegalese, particularly in Saint-Louis, share a common history with Mauritania. "Former Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah was himself born in Saint-Louis. Our relations should be based on mutual respect," he emphasized.
The fishermen are particularly critical of the abusive checks and actions of certain members of the Mauritanian security forces. "We are constantly asked for our residency permit, even though we know that all foreigners must have their papers in order. These documents are requested in Rosso, but their issuance can take months. In the meantime, if you are stopped, they might even tear up your papers," explained Mr. Fall.
This situation, he said, has serious human consequences. Many Senegalese women have been forced to return home from Mauritania. Fishermen say their daily movements are restricted: "Going to the market, the beach, or even the mosque has become risky. You get stopped and sent back to Senegal," he lamented.
Worse still, the expulsions of Senegalese people are reportedly on the rise. "They handcuff you, without food or water. Some spend four or five days in these conditions. Yet, even a prisoner has the right to dignity," denounced the spokesperson for the fishermen, describing these treatments as "inhumane."
The fishermen of Guet Ndar are calling for the direct involvement of the highest Senegalese authorities. They are asking the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to open a frank dialogue with the Mauritanian authorities in order to find a lasting solution. They are also questioning the current state of cooperation between the two countries.
Baye Boli Fall also called for peace and the preservation of fraternal relations between Senegal and Mauritania. "We are brotherly and Muslim countries. Some things should never exist between us. We call with all our strength for peace and respect for human dignity," he concluded.
