Kaolack : Le maire Serigne Mboup boycotte un forum économique et dénonce des sabotages politiques
Kaolack Mayor Serigne Mboup announced in a press release this Friday his refusal to participate in the economic forum on oil and gas, planned to take place at a municipal complex. As president of the Kaolack Chamber of Commerce, he cited "recent circumstances" to justify this decision, accusing members of the former Benno Bokk Yakaar regime and local Pastef officials of seeking to "denigrate the town hall, sabotage ongoing projects, and sow confusion" for political motives. "I would have liked to contribute to this important event, but recent circumstances do not allow it," wrote Mboup, who denounced a clear attempt to "tarnish the image of our institution and attempt to weaken it."
He points out that "the town hall is everyone's business" and can only be contested through elections, in accordance with democratic rules. The mayor points to provocations including "insults, death threats, denigration and attempted sabotage," with several attackers arrested and brought before the court, but under political pressure to be released, including through crowds in front of the court. Mboup criticizes the lack of intervention by security services during demonstrations in front of the town hall and his home: "These people allowed themselves to organize demonstrations in front of the town hall and at my home, without any intervention from the security services. All this suggests a dangerous plot aimed at destabilizing the town hall, which has already been attacked several times, amid a worrying silence from the authorities."
He cites the recent death of a citizen in the commune as an illustration of the risks, and reaffirms: "We have chosen the republican path: not to give in to provocations." Despite these tensions, the mayor insists on the town hall's commitment to transparency and citizen participation: "All debates are accepted, all constructive criticism is heard, because it enriches local democracy. On the other hand, we cannot tolerate insults, death threats, provocations, nor acts of sabotage and destruction of public property."
To avoid a confrontation at the forum, he opted for a boycott, while announcing a press conference this afternoon to detail his position. "Kaolack deserves better than division and manipulation. Kaolack deserves unity and action," he concluded, calling for the protection of the rule of law. This boycott comes amid fierce political rivalries in Kaolack, a strategic city where Pastef is seeking to consolidate its hold after the 2023 local elections.

Go ahead Serigne the almighty Allah will never let you down.
