Lutte contre le mariage des enfants : l’AJS sensibilise les élèves à Thiès

Early marriage is a phenomenon that undermines the future of girls, especially in terms of education and health. To combat this scourge, the Association of Senegalese Women Jurists (AJS) organized an awareness session at the Jules Sagna High School, as part of a project entitled: "From community to regional: a multisectoral approach against child marriage in Senegal and the development of a joint agenda with Niger."

This initiative aims to strengthen the fight against early and forced marriages through an inclusive approach involving schools, communities and institutional actors.

Human rights at the heart of awareness-raising

According to Aïda Niang, a member of the Senegalese Council of Women (COSEF), the current context in Senegal places human rights at the heart of the debates. She emphasizes the importance of educating students from a young age about issues related to fundamental rights so that they can lead the fight against early and forced marriage.

“Women’s rights are never definitively secured. It is through a perpetual struggle that women will gain autonomy and power,” she stated. She reiterated that children are a priority for COSEF, which has been committed to the fight against forced marriage for several decades.

A strong commitment from the Jules Sagna High School

The principal of Lycée Jules Sagna, Alioune Lam, welcomed the choice of his establishment to host this activity.

"It is an honor for our high school to be part of this project led by AJS and women's organizations. Early marriage is a scourge that undermines the fundamental rights of children, including the right to education and health," he said.

He also reported cases of young girls forced to abandon their studies due to early marriage. For him, this workshop represents a real opportunity for students to better understand their rights and prepare to defend them.

"A child's place is at school."

For her part, the president of the regional branch of COSEF in Thiès, Dieynaba Diallo, reminded everyone that the child's place is not in the home but at school.

She emphasizes the need to educate and support young girls, stressing that the marriage of a 15- or 16-year-old girl should no longer be tolerated. She calls for a collective commitment to combat early marriage and violence against women.

Committed students

The students of Lycée Jules Sagna gave a favorable welcome to this initiative and pledged to relay awareness messages within their community.

Through this approach, AJS and its partners aim to strengthen community and institutional mobilization in order to end child marriage and guarantee young girls their right to education and a better future.
