At the end of the ceremony to award distinctions to ten personalities from Thiès, the mayor, Dr. Babacar Diop, announced the continuation of the "Medalists of the City of Thiès" initiative, intended to honor the women and men who have marked the history and development of the city of the Railway.

According to the mayor, this ceremony is primarily intended to celebrate the identity and founding values of Thiès. "Through this ceremony, we wanted to pay tribute to Thiès and the founding values of this city, but also to celebrate the men and women who have rendered distinguished service to our city and participated in the effort to build the fine reputation of Thiès," he declared.

In this context, the municipality decided to institutionalize this distinction. "That is why we have decided, each year, to award a number of individuals the Medal of Dignity, which is the Medal of the City of Thiès, as a token of recognition," he explained.

The mayor also emphasized the educational and symbolic dimension of this initiative. "Through this ceremony, we also wanted to offer these distinguished individuals as examples to our youth so that they can inspire young people and future generations," he added.

Reflecting on the organization of this edition, Babacar Diop clarified that it corresponds to the year 2025, even though it could not be held on the initially planned date. "This edition is for the year 2025. We were supposed to organize it during 2025, but we encountered a scheduling conflict," he stated.

The mayor also announced plans for a major edition in 2026, which is already generating considerable anticipation among the people of Thiès. "The major 2026 edition is being prepared and will present us with many challenges in selecting the honorees. We are already seeing some frustrations from certain families and women in Thiès who are demanding greater recognition," he confided.

According to him, this distinction is highly coveted today. "This medal is now requested by many families in Thiès, sometimes even posthumously. Many people deserve it. We have great figures in all fields," he emphasized.

To ensure the transparency of the process, he announced that a commission would be established to select the recipients. "With the commission I will set up, we will be able to make choices and proceed with the selection, even though we know it will be difficult," he assured.

As with this edition, ten individuals will be honored at the next ceremony. "Ten individuals will be chosen to be honored during 2026. We will announce all the selection procedures and the date of the ceremony by December 2026," concluded the mayor of Thiès.

ON REND HOMMAGE POUR QUOI ? Un jour, sentant la gêne qui se lisait sur mon visage lors d’une remise de médaille, un vieux collègue s’est discrètement approché de moi pour me glisser à l’oreille : «Cela se voit que tu n’aimes pas ça. Ne le prend pas comme un signal de ton institution mais plutôt comme la satisfaction que ceux avec qui tu as travaillé veulent te témoigner ». En effet, comment être sincère dans les remerciements quand la règle du quota s’impose d’entrée ? Des thiessois méritants, vous en connaissez des wagons et ils sont zappés. Parmi les « élus », il y en a qui sont là uniquement par la politique et rien d’autre. Ce genre de cérémonie me met mal à l’aise car il vous rappelle toujours les critères subjectifs qui sont mis en œuvre pour choisir. Je suis thiessois de naissance et j’ai grandi dans cette cité que j’ai quittée depuis 46 ans et à laquelle je reste attaché par le cœur et la famille. De tous ceux qui méritent un hommage des thiessois, même à titre posthume, il y en a un qui ne sera jamais honoré et ne l’a jamais été. Toute sa vie durant, il a été l’objet de plaisanteries et de mépris dus au métier qu’il exerçait. Je ne sais pas s’il est encore en vie ou pas. À l’époque, il était le seul vidangeur de fosses septiques connu dans la ville. Des camions vidangeurs, il n’y en avait pas. Quand on voit aujourd’hui, avec la grève des camions vidangeurs, la galère et le risque que cela génère, je mesure l’importance que cet homme représentait mais que personne ne voyait. On le regardait de haut et on ne l’appelait pas Monsieur mais M. N. Bounèye comme si on était obligé de l’identifier par son métier que tout le monde méprisait et qui soulageait pourtant tout son monde. Les plus dures avec lui étaient les femmes qui se moquaient sans cesse pendant que les hommes l’ignoraient royalement. Il ne volait personne, n’agressait personne. Il travaillait et gagnait son pain honnêtement à la sueur de son front. En même temps, le service qu’il rendait était d’une importance sanitaire et environnemental monumental. Cet homme qui nous permettait de respirer frais, de ne pas souffrir de constipations dues à la retenue, moyennant quelques petits milliers de cfa, nous avons raté l’occasion de lui dire merci. Aujourd’hui, nous rendons hommage à d’autres et quand nous essayons de recenser leur contribution au sein du collectif thiessois, il y a comme un bug.
