Senegal reaffirmed its firm commitment to eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM) on the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, celebrated on February 6, 2026 at the Noom Hotel, during a ceremony presided over by the Ministry of Family, Social Action and Solidarity.

In her speech, the Minister of Family, Social Action and Solidarity, Maïmouna Dièye, recalled that the fight against FGM is a national priority at the heart of the Senegal 2050 Agenda. She stressed that the eradication of this practice is not only a matter of social protection, but represents a major development challenge, directly affecting human capital, dignity and the future of girls and women.

As the prime minister responsible for family and social protection issues, she stated that this battle cannot be won without a cross-cutting government approach, mobilizing all relevant sectors such as health, education, justice, security, finance, and local authorities under the coordination of the Prime Minister. She highlighted the progress made in some areas, while calling for renewed efforts in zones where the prevalence remains high.

A powerful tribute to the survivors

At the end of her speech, Ms. Dièye made a point of showing bravery and gratitude towards the survivors of female genital mutilation. She invited all the participants, who had come in large numbers, to pay tribute to the women and girls who were victims with a round of applause, acknowledging their courage, resilience, and dignity. It was a moment of intense emotion that marked the ceremony and served as a reminder that this struggle is, above all, a human one.

Repair kits for FGM survivors

Ms. Dièye also announced the distribution of repair kits for survivors of female genital mutilation, including medical equipment and psychosocial support, to facilitate their comprehensive care, restore their health and dignity, and mark a concrete commitment from the State to the affected women and girls.
