Onion importers in Thiès, during a press briefing held this Friday, September 12, 2025, expressed their anxiety about the future of their sector. "We are afraid for our future and we feel threatened by the way our authorities manage business in this country."
The president of the onion sector in the Thiès region, Aly Ndiaye, president of the Thiès traders' college, in charge of communications for IPOS national, vice-president of Unacois/Diapo Thiès, wants to be precise: "in accordance with state policy, we only import foreign onions when local production is exhausted, when there is no more availability on the market."
And, he continues, "this is what we did when, during the Gamou period, we noticed that the local onion had run out, it is only now that we have resorted to imported onions. Had it not been for the first shipment which was easily sold, households would be in total disarray." However, Mr. Ndiaye is offended, "the second shipment estimated at more than 10,000 tons is now unfortunately blocked at the port of Dakar, with taxes which, every day God makes, are climbing at a dizzying speed, which risks being very expensive for consumers."
According to him, the Market Regulation Agency (ARM) in Senegal, which regulates the trade of agricultural products, after noting that today, throughout the country, there is a serious shortage of onions on the market, the said product being in short supply, wrote to alert the supervisory Ministry, but in vain. Because, he notes, "since then, these importing traders, each of whom has, at least, more than thirty years of loyal service on the market, have been having great difficulty getting in touch with the Minister of Industry and Trade, who has so far not deigned to provide us with the slightest element of response."
For Aly Ndiaye and his comrades, Dr. Serigne Gueye Diop seems to be rowing against the vision of the Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, and Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, who advocate the Jub-Jubal-Jubanti. They believe this minister would be better off resigning if he feels he is not up to the task.
